We can't go back and change the beginning… but we can start where we are and change the ending.

More than 4 in 10 cases* of cancer could be prevented through lifestyle changes such as not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, moving more and drinking less alcohol. Let's be clear on cancer, we can all take action to reduce our risk. Your health matters. Better health matters.

Kickstart your health

There's never been a better time to kickstart your health. Our modern world doesn't help us out, and unhealthy habits creep up and catch us out. To reduce our risk of cancer, we’ve got to switch out those unhealthy habits with healthy ones. Daily, we must make small changes and choices to reduce our risk.

  • Stopping smoking is the most important thing you can do for your health. If you’d like to quit, but don’t know where to start, talk to us.
  • Nearly two-thirds of Brits are overweight or living with obesity. This extra weight causes pressure to build up around vital organs, making it harder for the body to fight against diseases like cancer.
  • Regular exercise reduces your risk of many long-term conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancers. No marathon running required – start small; start with gentle, daily 10-minute walks.
  • Cut your consumption. No level of alcohol consumption is safe. Cutting back on alcohol will be good for your health and reduce your risk of cancer.

When it's diagnosed early, treatment is more likely to be successful. If you have noticed any signs and symptoms of cancer, don't hesitate to speak to your GP.

Wake-up shake-up

Paul woke in a hospital bed having suffered a heart episode while celebrating a friend’s 50th birthday. “Obese and alcohol abuse were the words on my hospital release note that struck me between the eyes.” Paul took control of his lifestyle and now feels happier and healthier than ever.

Saving money, saving time, saving my life

Hannah was walking at Hengistbury Head one day when she took a breath and "sounded like a wheezy old accordion! I’d reached a point when I thought – 'why am I doing this to myself?'" She quit smoking and cut her risk. "There's nothing in me that would make me want to go back to smoking."

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
