Your invitation to a transformation

Take Twelve: Dorset’s healthy living transformation

LiveWell Dorset is inviting the county to a twelve-week healthy lifestyle transformation. Leading Public Health Dorset’s Prevention at Scale programme; LiveWell Dorset helps you make lifestyle changes that keep you healthier for longer.

Take Twelve is a twelve-week program starting 1 March 2019 inviting residents to commit to a healthy living goal and conquer unhealthy habits. Goals could include reaching a target weight, quitting smoking, drinking less alcohol or completing a fitness challenge such as couch to 5k.

During the program, participants will receive support and advice from LiveWell Dorset. Coaches, personal trainers and nutritionists will share information to guide participants to live well. Online community and tools will encourage participants to take each next step to live well.

Local GP and Public Health Fellow Dr Emer Forde says:

”Much of the ill health and unhappiness I see in general practice is related to, or made worse, by less healthy lifestyle choices.

If we all took up this challenge, the positive physical and mental health benefits for us as individuals and our communities could be transformative“.

Being physically active can lead to a happier healthier life for people of all ages. Losing just 5 per cent of body weight will result in huge health benefits such as lower risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Becoming smoke-free is the single most important step smokers can take to enhance length and quality of life. Cutting back on alcohol reduces the risk of developing liver disease, high blood pressure, depression and cancer.

Join Dorset’s healthy living challenge.

Notes to editors:

LiveWell Dorset is provided by Public Health Dorset, a partnership of Bournemouth Borough Council, Dorset County Council and the Borough of Poole Council. It supports the wider health care system as the public are signposted Dorset's single point of access service.

We are here to support any adult in Dorset to quit smoking, drink less alcohol, lose weight and become more active. We use a framework of behaviour change science that identifies capability, opportunity and motivation barriers to healthy living (COM-B).

By registering online or calling our Weymouth based contact centre, residents can access free healthy living advice and coaching. Advisors offer lifestyle guidance and support choices. Coaches journey with clients over a year, empowering them to set and achieve lifestyle changes (typically six one-to-one telephone consultations). Advisors and coaches direct clients to a range of opportunities including discounts to local gyms, activities and weight loss group vouchers.

Dorset residents can access LiveWell Dorset, or join Take Twelve for free.

Residents can phone LiveWell on freephone 0800 840 1628 or visit for more information.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
