Get active this August

Getting out and about!

Although the weather may be unpredictable at times, summer is in full swing and hopefully everyone is having a chance to enjoy the longer days and some warmer temperatures. This time of year also brings the school holidays and those with children may find themselves looking for things to fill the seemingly never ending days and weeks!

Even if you don’t have children, you may have taken a much needed break and have some time to fill. Summer is the perfect opportunity to get outside and experience the benefits of being in nature. I don’t know about you, but as soon as I step foot out of the house or office and breathe in some fresh air, my mood is instantly boosted, I feel energised, invigorated and have a renewed focus for the rest of the day. We are lucky in Dorset to be surrounded by so many beautiful locations that provide plenty of opportunity to be active, explore and to connect with others. There might just be some hidden gems waiting to be discovered on your doorstep. So why not get your shoes on, step out and see what you can do in the great outdoors?

Inspired by the Paris Olympics?

If like me, you have been glued to the Olympic Games this summer, watching the athletes with awe and perhaps discovering a new favourite sport, why not use this as inspiration to try something different? There are a variety of events and activities taking place across Dorset, with the added bonus of many of these being free! So if you’re looking for something fun, free and enjoyable to do, whether as an individual, group or a family, here are some ideas...

Mini Athletics

For any young, budding Olympian, Brewery Square in Dorchester is hosting a free mini athletics programme every Tuesday until 27th August. With sessions available for ages 2 up to 7, this could be a great way for your little one to let off some steam, learn new skills and follow in the footsteps of their sporting heroes!

Thorncombe Woods Olympics Trail

Throughout August and running until 7th September, Thorncombe Woods in Dorchester is home to a family friendly, nature inspired, Olympic themed trail. People are invited to explore the reserve and along the way, discover challenges to take part in. What a great way to get the family together in the fresh air to burn off some energy, make memories and share in the fun; all whilst being active.

‘Skatefest 2024’

Two of the standout Olympic events for me have got to be skateboarding and BMX, which are both such different, electrifying and exhilarating sports to watch. I can only imagine taking part must provide a real surge of excitement and a rush of adrenaline! If you, or any of your friends or family have been inspired by these unique sports then you are in luck! On 18th August, Blandford Skate Park will be hosting ‘Skatefest 2024’, which is a free event packed full of activities, competitions, workshops and demonstrations. If you have never set foot on a skateboard before, fear not! All equipment is provided and you will have the chance to give it a go to see if this the sport the you.

Yoga in the park

If you’re looking for something a bit slower paced, Park Yoga could be your perfect match. The Park Yoga charity provides free outdoor sessions in a variety of beautiful locations across Dorset.  Although not an Olympic sport, yoga is a fantastic way to move your body and can help improve flexibility, strength and positively impact your wellbeing.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
