Helping you to help others through COVID-19

Our refreshed training offer to help you support others through this challenging time

The coronavirus outbreak is an unprecedented time for everyone. Many people will find themselves supporting people in ways they wouldn't normally, and looking after our own and others' wellbeing is as important as ever. 

As part of the public health response to COVID-19, we have been working to develop a virtual offer to build capacity in organisations supporting people’s wellbeing in response to the pandemic. The primary audience is colleagues in organisations (be they paid or voluntary) who, through new or existing roles, are providing support to the public (for example, those working on COVID helplines).

Having engaged with colleagues from the community/voluntary sector across Dorset, it is clear there a number of people in new roles in which they are providing support to the public. This support is typically a mix of the ‘practical’ and the ‘emotional’. The ‘helping people help others’ offer will support colleagues in handling the more emotional side of conversations.

We are designing a three-module offer to fulfil our goal of helping you to help others:
  1. Looking after oneself, based around the Five Ways to Wellbeing. 
  2. Reaching out to others: an introduction to Healthy Conversations and empathetic listening.
  3. Enhanced skills training, based on audience needs. We will work with partners through delivery of modules 1 and 2 to identify what would be helpful at this level. Examples of what could be covered include more in-depth lessons from behaviour change theory & practice, FAQs and 'model responses' to common presenting issues. 

The offer will comprise a mix of group training (60 minutes per module online using Zoom) and online materials/links to further resources.

We are also investigating whether we can produce recorded workshop sessions to be available online, on-demand.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.

If you would like to use extra services (such as slimming clubs and pharmacies) we have to share this information with them. For us to be able to put you in touch with these services, we must have your consent to share that information with the service (we’ll ask for that later, when if you sign up for extra services).
