How to cook rice right every time

Rice is a staple ingredient in a host of dishes – risotto, curry, kedgeree and paella, just to name a few! It is an essential ingredient to keep in your cupboards for quick, healthy meal prep.

Rice is an affordable source of important nutrients including carbohydrates and B vitamins, required for energy production. Be sure to choose wholegrain varieties of rice, which contain much more fibre and vitamins than their white counterparts. Here we run you through the basic steps for creating delicious, fluffy rice, every time.

A step-by-step guide to cooking rice

  1. Always work on a 1:2 ratio when cooking rice – 1 part rice to 2 parts water, and adjust the quantity depending on how many you are cooking for.
  2. Add one cup of rice and 2 cups of water to a saucepan. Put it on a high heat and bring to the boil.
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat until simmering and cover with a lid.
  4. The amount of time it needs to cook will vary depending on the variety of rice you use, so follow the packet instructions for guidance.
  5. When the rice is cooked, remove it from the heat but keep the lid on for at least 5 minutes. This will steam the rice and make it fluffy.

Your rice is now ready to serve or use in another dish. Cooking rice well is a useful kitchen skill to learn but may take a few attempts; don’t be afraid to lift off the lid during the cooking process to check if it’s cooked. As with learning any new skill – practice makes perfect!

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
