Getting active during the working day

Sitting still at your desk all day? Let's get moving!

Encouraging people to be active at work is a challenge but considering we spend an average of 60% of our waking hours at work, finding a way to incorporate movement into our working day is becoming increasingly important - especially for those of us who spend most of our time sitting at a computer.

Research shows that teams who are active at work are not only happier and healthier, but also more productive and efficient from an increase in focus and concentration, memory and cognitive function. Active employees are also more able to cope with stress than their less active colleagues, and are less likely to suffer from major health problems, take sickness leave or to have an accident at work.

Employees who incorporate physical activity into their working day have reported greater enjoyment of their work and improved co-operation and rapport with colleagues, which in turn helps managers to retain quality staff in their teams.

The team at Active Dorset can support with a wide range of information, resources and signposting to activities to help you support colleagues to move more both at work and at home, including free training as part of the Active Workplaces programme.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
