Your healthy living profile

Have you ever tried to lose weight, get active, drink less alcohol or quit smoking? It’s tough isn’t it? Seven in ten of us have two or more unhealthy habits. Two thirds of us are trying to lose weight most of the time. You are not alone! Making a healthy lifestyle change is not easy. Switching bad habits with healthy ones is tough.

But there is hope!

Daily, we hear stories of our clients overcoming mountains to healthy lifestyle. More than 20,000 people in Dorset have received our support to make a lifestyle change. This week, as well as celebrating these stories, we’re inviting you to create your own healthy living profile in our new online resource, My LiveWell.

Stories of hope

Working mum Natalie, juggled managing her weight with getting active and family life. She overcame by joining a weight loss program and incorporated couch to 5k with her regular dog walk.

Department manager Ivan faced high blood pressure and was at risk of diabetes due to his desk job and unhealthy eating habits. He overcame by walking to work, swimming and learning to cook new healthy recipes.

Mum and daughter duo Lynette and Maureen wanted to lose weight and quit smoking. While they didn’t reach their weight loss goal last year, they are free from cigarettes and are now focusing on losing weight. They’ve switched spending pounds on cigs with losing them in weight.

Keen photographer Owen’s eyesight was at risk due to type 2 diabetes. Weighing 18 stone, he struggled to walk up hills, often becoming out of breath and having to stop. Owen has lost 5 stone and no longer takes medicine to control his diabetes.

“My clothes are too big and I have had to buy new ones! My life has been transformed in the last six months.”

This can be your story too.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
