At LiveWell Dorset, people often say to us they find it hard not to keep eating, or pick at food after a meal, even when they feel full.. Regularly overeating is a very common reason people struggle with their weight, but it is possible to adjust your eating habits. With overeating being one of the main causes of obesity, many people are keen to improve their level of self-control in order to stop themselves eating more than they need. Here are a five hints and tips to get you started:

  1. Smaller Plates – Using a smaller plate can help to reduce your portion size.
  2. Precise Quantities – Measuring and weighing food quantities to the recommended amount e.g. the amount of pasta you eat.
  3. Hydrate – Sometimes, you think you’re hungry, but you’re actually thirsty. Drink plenty of water during the day and you’ll find yourself feeling fuller.
  4. Avoid Processed Foods – Processed foods are usually less filling than healthier alternatives. They also leave you feeling worse after eating.
  5. Hide Leftovers – Don’t leave leftovers in the pan waiting to be eaten. Get them packed away in the fridge or freezer as quickly as possible to reduce temptation.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
