Are you are one of the six in ten smokers who want to quit? You can achieve that goal with the right help and support.
Picture day one of your smoke-stop challenge: “I am a non-smoker”. Changing a habit takes self-belief and confidence that you can, and you will complete your goal. Forget the words “I am trying to quit”… replace them with the words “I am a non-smoker”. This is you, now – believe it! Repeat these words to yourself, be certain to take hold of your smoke-free life. You are not trying to quit any more – you have quit. You are a non-smoker.
How will you remind yourself of this new truth? Katy placed post-it notes in places and spaces where she would usually light up. When driving home from work her go-to would have been a cigarette or to stop at a shop to pick up a pack. She placed post-it notes in her car, in her home, in her life. These positive phrases – ‘You are a non-smoker’ changed her self-talk and ultimately changed her life.
When will the cravings strike you? What situations are you in? Where will you be? What will you be doing? Picture that moment, then replace it with the elation of your smoke-stop celebration. For Katy, her son, Dad and nan were there to celebrate and encourage her every step.
Lynette quit during pregnancy but sparked up again afterwards – “the worst thing I ever did.” It was the cost of smoking that led Lynette to want to quit for good. She discovered she'd sent a house deposit up in smoke. Along with her Mum, they made a commitment to quit together.
Lynette found the NHS Smokefree app helpful to her stop-smoke challenge. It would encourage her each day with each new step towards being smoke-free. Before she knew it - 'I've done the first week!' She set aside her savings towards a family holiday.
One of our Wellness Coaches recalls three phone calls with a client: Phone call one: the client made a commitment to stop smoking in their car. Phone call two: it was their home. Finally, during the third call, they were ready to go the whole hog.
