The Benefits of Weight Loss

Losing weight doesn’t come easy, but it does come with many serious health benefits - some of which you may not see coming.

If you’re considering starting a journey to lose weight, it is important to know many of the benefits you will experience as a result which can be a great motivator along the way. So, to set yourself up with success, consider all of the different ways that losing weight can improve your social life, your medical health and your psychological health.

Losing weight will often lead to much better quality sleep. Losing just a small percentage of your body fat can help you sleep better and longer throughout the night and can also alleviate sleep apnoea and snoring.

Although going to the gym and all the effort you have put in to exercising and getting active has had significant positive benefits on the physical appearance of your body, have you stopped to think about how good you feel and the impact it has had on your mood as a result? Carrying out physical exercise releases feel-good chemicals which are responsible for the high you feel when you finish working out. These chemicals interact with the receptors in your brain which reduces the perception of pain and deliver a positive feeling in your body.

When you started your journey to lose weight, you were probably solely thinking about slimming down your body, but did you think about how much losing weight can benefit your skin? When you work out, you sweat more which encourages your pores to push out all the unwanted junk from beneath your skin. You are also more likely to have improved your diet, so your skin will be soaking up all the nutrients from all the fruit and veg you have been eating.

Nothing strengthens your immune system better than leading a healthy lifestyle. Ensuring you get your eight hours sleep a night, feeding your body all the goodness it needs and exercising regularly are all things that boost your immunity much better than any other un-natural method.

After losing a significant amount of weight, you may start to notice that you have so much more energy compared to before. It’s not just because you’ll be getting more nutrients from healthier food either; you’ll find that with carrying less weight, your body will be using less energy. Slimming down has also shown to improve oxygen efficiency, so you’ll find simple tasks such as walking up the stairs a whole lot easier too.

Your thyroid gland releases two very important hormones that regulate your metabolism and can also affect your muscle strength. When you lose weight and burn fat, your hormone levels stay steady and it can be easier for you to maintain your weight loss in the long run.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
