Tips for a happy, healthy summer

Summer is a time of warmer, longer days, sunshine, and time outdoors. It's the perfect season to prioritise your health and wellbeing. Whether you're planning a holiday, or simply enjoying living in our beautiful county, here are some simple tips for healthy living that will boost your overall wellbeing.

Stay hydrated: in the warmer months it is even more crucial to stay hydrated. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially when you're spending time outdoors.

Dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and other health issues. By the time you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. Keep a water bottle with you wherever you go and try to keep sipping throughout the day. If you find drinking water boring, infuse it with fresh fruit like lemon or cucumber for a refreshing twist.

Eat fresh and seasonal food: there is a marvellous variety of fresh fruit and vegetables in summer and even if you aren’t the biggest fan of fruit and veg, you are sure to find something you will enjoy

Take advantage of this abundance of fresh food and add as many colourful fruits and veggies into your meals as you can to make the most of a wide range of nutrients. Fresh salads, grilled vegetables, and fruit salads are great options for healthy and delicious summer meals.

Protect your skin: with more time spent outdoors, it's essential to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 on all exposed areas of your skin, even on cloudy days.

Don't forget to reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and lightweight, protective clothing can also help shield your skin from the sun.

Get moving outdoors: take advantage of the warm weather and longer days by getting active. Go for a hike, a bike ride, a swim, or join a class like yoga in the park. Outdoor activities not only help you stay physically fit but also allow you to connect with nature and boost your mood with fresh air and vitamin D from the sun.

Prioritise sleep: getting enough quality sleep is crucial for overall wellbeing. Summertime usually means more social opportunities and it's easy to get caught up in late-night activities that disrupt your sleep. Create a relaxing bedtime routine and aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Keep your bedroom cool and dark, and limit screen time before bed.

Practice mindfulness: Summer can be a busy time for social gatherings, holidays and events. It's essential to take time for yourself and practice mindfulness to stay grounded and in the moment. Choose activities that you enjoy and that help you relax, like reading a book by the beach. Disconnect from all that tech and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.

Stay connected: Summer is a great time to connect with friends and loved ones. Spend time with your favourite people, creating memories, and enjoying the company of others. Social connections are vital for our mental health. Plan a picnic, a beach day, or a barbecue and share laughter and good times with those who matter most to you.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
