What are five benefits of exercise?

Five steps for a happier, healthier you

What are five benefits of exercise?

When trying to work towards a healthy lifestyle goal such as weight loss, you might think that all there is to it is watching what you eat, drinking plenty of water and getting your 8 hours of sleep. However, regular exercise is one of the most important factors to living a healthy life. Here are five key benefits you can see through regular exercise.

  1. Regular exercise makes you happier!
Regular exercise has been proven to improve your mood, with a variety of different mental benefits. Regular exercise has the benefit of decreasing feelings of depression, anxiety and stress, by producing positive changes in the parts of your brain that regulate stress and anxiety, while also producing endorphins to keep you happy and smiling!
  2. Contributes to weight loss
Along with a poor diet, inactivity is one of the biggest contributors to weight gain and obesity. Regular exercise is one of the best ways to keep your weight in check, as it makes use of any excess energy from food that would otherwise be stored in your body as fat. Regular exercise will help you to manage your weight and aid weight loss by putting you in a calorie deficit. You can learn more about calorie intake here.
  3. A better nights’ sleep
Another benefit to exercise is that it can help you to relax and sleep much better. The energy depletion that occurs during exercise can help to stimulate recuperative processes, leading to a deeper, more fulfilling nights’ sleep, while also helping you to feel more energised during the day.
  4. Promotes stronger muscles and bones
Exercise plays a vital role in building and maintaining strong muscles and bones. For example, physical activity such as weight lifting when paired with protein intake can stimulate muscle building and exercise, in general, helps to strengthen your bone density. It is important to build up strong muscles and bones to maintain your strength and reduce the risk of your body breaking down.
  5. Keeps your mind healthy
Regular exercise can help improve brain function; by protecting your thinking and strengthening memory recall. By promoting the flow of blood and oxygen to your brain, you’ll stimulate hormones that enhance brain cell growth.

And these are just a handful of the benefits of regular exercise. For a general look into your overall health, you can take the Are you Living Well? quiz to see how you compare to the national average.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
