Find motivation to eat well

A lack of motivation is a difficult problem because it often comes hand in hand with a lack of energy, enthusiasm and willpower. Your lack of motivation might be due to past failures, depression, social anxiety or a wide number of other associated problems. But don't worry, you can find that motivation to start eating better and once you do, you'll see improvements in other areas of your life too.

Step 1 – set your target

The first step to finding motivation is to have an honest conversation with yourself. Why are you lacking motivation to change your eating behaviours? What can you change within your lifestyle which will make healthy eating easier? What are you actually trying to achieve? Whether it is a specific amount of weight loss, or to reduce your likelihood of health problems such as diabetes, you should set your target, with a timeframe, so that you know at all times what you're working towards. Set your goal using your healthy living profile.

Step 2 – start slow

If you're struggling to find motivation, then perhaps don't rush into a huge eating habit change, as you'll be less likely to actually achieve your target. If you start slow, with smaller steps that lead to a larger overall goal, then you will have milestone achievements along the way which will help to increase your motivation. A conversation with one of our Wellness Coaches could help - get in contact with us today.

Step 3 – be adventurous

Changing your eating habits doesn't have to be a chore, you can make it an adventure! Start looking into new recipes, new flavours, foreign cuisines and better ways of cooking which results in not only a delicious meal but an exciting one too. Perhaps you might want to try being vegetarian for a month to try some new foods that you may never have considered before as a great way to get more vegetables and healthy foods into your diet.

Step 4 – track your progress

You might find it hard to see the positive effects of your progress if you aren’t tracking your progress. You could start by taking before and after pictures of yourself, noting down your weight and keeping a food diary. Knowing what you have achieved will give you that extra push to keep working towards your final goal. Track your progress in your healthy living profile.

Step 5 – share your progress

Talking with other people about your achievements and hearing positive feedback can spur you on to continue your positive changes. Share your progress with family and friends. You could try signing up to fitness apps, groups or forums to talk with likeminded people and find a community of motivators. Join Our LiveWell Facebook group to share your progress.

Once you start to get motivated and being to see results, you'll find your motivation only increases. Getting through the first few weeks of a diet change is always the hardest time, but after that it gets easier and you will feel so much better within yourself. Contact us today for help to change your eating habits.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
