New season, new you

Why September, not January, is the best month to make a lifestyle change

September is the perfect month to get into – or back into – a healthier lifestyle.

Once the chaos of summer holidays are over, and everyone starts getting back to their normal routines at work and school, it feels like a fresh start and a good moment to think about a mini reboot.

It’s an opportunity to take back some control in areas where you might have all felt a bit powerless, set goals and create healthy routines that are focused on you.

It has been shown that September, not January, is the best time to break old habits and build new ones. The New Year can feel like a pressurised time with everyone leaping into resolutions. But the nights are long and the weather is cold and those good intentions can peter out every quickly.

September is different. The mornings and evenings are lighter and the weather is usually better, too. Motivation for change is stronger, especially for those of us who have abandoned diets or exercise routines after the social whirl of summer and are now looking to reclaim some lost ground.

Without the pressure of sticking to New Year’s resolutions, you can quietly choose a goal and start to work towards it, which in turn means that you’re much more likely to stick to your diet or workout as the weather turns colder.

Top tips for your autumn reboot

Get everything ready in advance: If you plan to start exercising more regularly, lay out your kit the night before as a reminder. If you want to eat more carefully make a list of healthy meal options and plan your menu for the week. If you -plan to give up smoking - choose your quit package and familiarise yourself with how everything works.

Buddy up: by joining forces with a friend who wants to make a change too, you can hold each other accountable if one of you doesn’t turn up for an exercise session or stick to the plan. It is also a lot more fun! If you don’t know anyone to ask, talk to us, we can help you find a local group of like-minded folk to cheer you on.

Celebrate every little win: give yourself a massive pat on the back for every achievement, no matter how small. If you’ve had a good workout session or lost an extra pound, feel proud, particularly if you stuck to your guns even when you weren't feeling motivated. Being positive and determined helps to lock you into your goal.

Show you mean business: registering with us for your free support is a way of committing to your healthy change. It also means our Coaches and Advisors will be on hand to check in and keep you accountable. We also have the tips and tools to support you if things aren't going to plan or motivation starts flagging.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
