Can you lose 10 pounds in a week?

The question “can you lose 10 pounds in a week” is an interesting one: in short, yes it may be possible… but it’s not recommended. Losing this amount of weight in such a short span of time could be very dangerous and is not something we would recommend you strive for. We face choices to make healthy (or unhealthy) decisions, daily. Consistent and sustained healthy choices add up for good health in the long term. Think tortoise, not hare! It’s better in the long-run. 

What is a safe amount of weight to lose in a week?

Of course, each individual will have unique fluctuations in weight depending on a variety of factors. Some people may be able to lose far more weight per week depending on what stage they are at in their weight loss journey and what type of diet they are on. 

 

For example, a diet that restricts things like carbohydrates (such as the ketogenic diet or a low carb diet) may see someone losing a drastic amount of weight within the first week due to a significant loss in water retention, rather than body fat; however, this level of weight would not be sustainable and would soon plateau.

 

Rapid weight loss itself can come with several risks, including an increased likelihood of developing gallstones, fatigue, headaches, an electrolyte imbalance, dehydration and general irritability. 

Healthier ways to lose 10 pounds

Some healthier ways to aim for losing 10 pounds over a longer period of time include following a low-calorie diet, following a more balanced diet (which can include eating fewer carbohydrates and more lean proteins, fibers and healthy fats), engaging in regular exercise and avoiding excessive amounts of junk and processed foods.

So as you can see, rapid weight loss like losing 10 pounds in a week is not particularly healthy, and is certainly not something you should strive to achieve.
