I used to do a fair bit of sport, but I guess I lost the appetite for it. I’ve become less active these past few years; have put on some weight and have become a little more lethargic. It was time I did something about that, so this programme was just the right springboard I needed. I’m in my late fifties with a desk job and I guess a few too unhealthy habits had set in.
"I work for an engineering company in Poole where our HR department was promoting the benefits of joining LiveWell Dorset. The friendly team from LiveWell visited our offices and offered us free Health MOTs, which measured our BMI, weight, blood pressure and lung age. It was helpful that we were able to do this at work – it caused a good chatter about our varying results!
I was a bit taken aback when my lung age indicated I had the lungs of a 79-year-old! Scott, from LiveWell Dorset discussed my assessment and options to take steps to turn that around. He let me know of an 8-week fitness programme taking place at AFC Bournemouth, with their Community Sports Trust. I’ve got to do something, I thought to myself, so I gave it a shot and applied.
Layne from the Community Sports Trust met me at Vitality Stadium on my first visit. He discussed my personal goals, explained how the programme works and introduced me to the coaches and other participants. The other lads were friendly, from all walks of life – we all had the common goal of improving our fitness.
We had a whole range of fitness abilities; some had run marathons, some had played football in the past, some had done very little exercise previously. Throughout the programme, we've been supportive of one another – no judgement or embarrassment – just lots of fun and encouragement!
Typical activities include a stretch and warm-up followed by a bit of cardio, one evening we jogged and sprinted the length of the stadium concourses. We usually end with some circuit training in the very same fitness suites the pros use. They put us through it! No pain no gain I guess – and I'm feeling the benefits.
I've improved my fitness in an environment with great camaraderie. I've realised it’s not just me who’s not as fit as I'd like to be! Along with a few other members of the group I've gone on to join AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust’s weekly walking football group on Monday evenings which keeps me scoring fitness goals!
My wife is pleased I'm doing a bit more regular fitness. Probably like a lot of people, we work all week, get home in the evening and have a glass of wine and a few snacks that we shouldn't! so it's all about diet as well as exercise. This has certainly helped my fitness and it’s made me want to improve my diet too."
