Jane's Take Twelve Story

Jane's walked herself to good health!

"Thanks to the challenge I've made a real proactive effort to complete 10,000 steps."

"I set my goal to complete 10,000 steps a day. I'd taken part in Beat the Street, saw Take Twelve and thought I'd give it a go! It's been the kick start for me to take care of my health.

I sit down in front of a screen at work all day with little time to move around - it's tricky to get away from my desk. Thanks to the challenge I've made a conscious effort to get up and complete my 10,000 steps. I decided to buy a second-hand treadmill and often start the day with a brisk 1,000 steps on it. I notice it when I don't start the day with a walk now! I don't feel as awake and ready for the day.

Jane

For the first time in my life, I've been getting up a little bit earlier and doing 1,000 steps before breakfast!

My Beat the Street loop

"Now the weather is nicer I often get out for a walk in the evenings. There were Beat the Street boxes close to my house, so I often do the same loop around those locations! I can quickly add up my steps walking around town. I've found that my pace has also increased! I'm definitely going to keep this up, it's a sustainable change. If I hadn't had the prompt through Beat the Streets and then Take Twelve, I wouldn't have made the effort.

Take Twelve has made me think. I'm making a conscious effort to keep my step count up. My Fitbit gives me reminders when I've been sat down for too long. I'm feeling better, more energised and invigorated, even though it's just walking! I'm pragmatic though - if I don't quite make it to 10,000 steps I don't put myself down.

I've made a new start and I will keep with it, as it's having a positive effect on mental wellbeing too. Thank you LiveWell for giving me the nudge to think about and look after my health."

For others thinking about making a change, I would say - just go for it!

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
