Winter wellbeing checklist

Perk yourself up with this list of simple actions that will help you feel more yourself.

Stay hydrated Cold air can dry you out, so keep sipping water throughout the day. Hot air from central heating can dry you out, too. Keep a bowl of water near a radiator to add some moisture to the air and keep things more comfortable. A good moisturiser will keep your skin happy. A good read: drink more water

Eat a balanced diet Fill your plate with colourful fruits and veggies, whole grains, and lean protein. Food rich in vitamins C and D will give your immune system a nice boost: choose citrus fruits, berries, fish and eggs. A good read: you are what you eat.

Keep Moving Staying active doesn’t have to mean braving the cold. Try indoor workouts, yoga, going up and down stairs, or wrap up and head out for a brisk walk when you can. Moving your body is great for your mood and energy. A good watch: exercise videos to do at home.

Prioritise Sleep Aim for 7–9 hours of restful sleep. Good sleep helps your immune system stay strong and keeps you feeling your best. Begin with a wind-down - stop scrolling, pack phones away, have a warm, non-caffeinated drink. A good read: Why am I always tired?

Manage Stress Winter can feel heavy at times. Gentle practices like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga can help you unwind and stay grounded. A good read: help to unwind

Stay Connected Reach out to friends and family, even if it’s just a quick call or message. Staying in touch helps ease feelings of isolation. A good read: staying social

Get Some Sunlight When the sun is out, try to spend a little time outdoors. Natural light can lift your mood and support healthy vitamin D levels. A good read: the benefits of nature

Keep a routine: a simple daily routine can bring structure and calm to your days, helping you feel more in control. Make a short list. It doesn't have to be long or complicated, just add some markers to tick off that get you through a healthier day.

Do things you enjoy: make space for hobbies that make you smile — reading, crafts, cooking, watching a favourite show, going for a walk, anything that feels good.

Reach out if you need support: if you’re finding winter especially tough, talking to a professional can really help. If you want to chat about feeling healthier, we are here for you.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
