SUP: Why paddleboarding is a good exercise

  • Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has taken the world by storm in recent years and Dorset is a perfect location to enjoy this pastime.

While it is often considered a gentle, low impact activity, SUP is also a surprisingly effective workout, engaging multiple muscle groups and improving overall fitness.

Why stand up paddleboarding is a good exercise

Below are five examples of how paddleboarding can boost your physical and mental wellbeing:

    1. It’s a full body workout

Propelling yourself through the water with the paddle is great for strengthening your core, with every stroke challenging your muscles, providing a dynamic resistance workout. Your lower body also gets a workout as you're essentially performing a continuous low-impact squat, which helps to strengthen your quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes.

    2. Great for your heart

Although considered a leisurely activity, SUP can raise your heart rate, especially when paddling against currents or strong wind. Regular paddleboarding can improve your overall cardiovascular health, reducing the risk of developing heart disease.

    3. Improves balance and coordination

Learning to stay upright on the unstable surface of the board requires you to engage your core and muscles to maintain balance.

    4. Boosts mental health

Spending time on the water surrounded by the tranquil sights and sounds of nature is well known for having a positive impact on mental health. SUP allows you to disconnect from daily stresses while the rhythmic motion of paddling can be soothing, helping to reduce anxiety.

    5. Helps to build endurance

Regular SUP is a great form of endurance training. The more you participate, the greater the improvement to your overall strength and conditioning. These enhancements will enable you to go for longer in the water and be able to navigate challenging weather conditions with greater ease and stability.

    Best paddleboarding spots in Dorset

Dorset's stunning coastline and inland waterways provide an ideal setting for fans of paddleboarding Here are a few popular locations:

    · Tuckton River/Christchurch Harbour

One of Dorset’s lesser known paddleboarding spots where you can follow the current downstream in a circular motion, meaning you never need to turn around and go against the current – great for beginners!

    · Wimborne/River Stour

Similar to Christchurch Harbour, this SUP hotspot boasts stunning views and an array of wildlife. Watch out for the swans though – they can be quite feisty!

    · Sandbanks/Poole Harbour/Brownsea Island

One of the most popular areas for paddleboarders in Dorset, this is a very beginner-friendly spot where you can hire a paddleboard if you don't own your own. Water is generally shallow at the harbour and close to Brownsea Island, but it can be more challenging depending on the tide.

    · Durdle Door/Lulworth Cove

If you enjoy paddleboarding against stunning backdrops, you won’t find anything more impressive than Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. Due to being partly in open sea, this is a location suited to more experienced paddleboarders.

    · Studland Bay/Old Harry Rocks

Another location for more advanced paddleboarders, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views up the Jurassic coast and see a variety of wildlife along the way. Be mindful of strong currents which can catch you  .

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
