Poole resident Katy started smoking in her teens to fit in with her friends. She'd always wanted to kick the habit, but wasn't sure how. She became increasingly mindful of the role model she was to her son and when he turned 7-years-old, she decided that it was time to quit for good.

Natalie’s family life is a busy one; juggling work with being a mum means that Natalie doesn’t get much time for herself. Working in a desk based job and looking after the kids, Natalie realised that she was sitting most of the time, and doing very little exercise.

In January 2017 whilst spending time with his 13-month old grandson and realised it was time to change. At a weight of 19 stone, with high blood pressure and borderline diabetes type I, Bernie decided to lose weight, stop drinking alcohol and get healthy. At the age of 55, Bernie now weighs 13 stone 13lbs, his previous 52-inch waist is now 38 inches, he drinks no alcohol and says he feels great.

Mick has tried several different diets with little success, which made him lose enthusiasm for weight loss. He has found his Slimming World group to be great socially and he has made new male and female friends who understand his weight loss journey. He enjoys the food options available at Slimming World which allows healthy full meals which also contribute to weight loss. His wife, Beverly, has also started Slimming World via a referral from LiveWell Dorset and has so far lost one and a half stone.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
