Mick was told his health would improve

Mick used to weigh 19 stone and with the help of LiveWell Dorset and Slimming World he now weighs just over 13 and a half stone. Along with our help and following a Slimming World diet, Mick has lost 10 inches off his chest and 8 inches off his waist and now feels great.

My story

Mick began to gain weight after an illness which affected his chest, making it difficult to maintain physical activity and changing to a largely sedentary job. After being told by medical professionals that his health would improve with weight loss, Mick was given our details by his GP. At that stage Mick weighed 19 stone and we referred him to Slimming World.

Everything is so much better after losing the weight

Mick has tried several different diets with little success, which made him lose enthusiasm for weight loss. He has found his Slimming World group to be great socially and he has made new friends who understand his weight loss journey. He enjoys the healthy meal options that result in weight loss. His wife, Beverly, has also joined Slimming World via a referral from LiveWell Dorset and has so far lost one and a half stone.

We have continued to follow up on Mick’s progress and his experience of Slimming World. He has found that the more weight he loses, the more he wants to lose and is thankful that we gave him the right support when he needed it most.

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
