Owen 5 stone weight loss

OWEN was told his health would improve

Owen's attitude to his health changed following a previous diagnosis of cancer. He felt that most things were a “walk in the park” after recovering from cancer and, when Owen developed type II diabetes, he initially didn’t take it very seriously. Weighing 18 stone Owen's blood sugar levels were through the roof, he was unfit and his eye sight had started to deteriorate due to the diabetes. Owen struggled to walk up hills, often becoming out of breath and having to stop.

Through our support and joining Weight Watchers, Owen has increased his physical activity and now weighs around 13 stone. He says that LiveWell Dorset has really changed his life.

This is his story

The prospect of deteriorating eyesight from diabetes type II scared keen photographer Owen and prompted him to go for a diabetic check-up with his GP. Despite being on lots of medication, Owen wasn't properly managing the lifestyle factors associated with diabetes. He was offered self-administered injections to regulate blood sugar levels but decided to explore other options after learning that the injections could have unpleasant side effects. Owen's main issue to address was his weight.

LiveWell Dorset gave me the helping hand I needed

Owen was provided with the contact details for LiveWell Dorset by his GP. When Owen phoned we completed a short assessment and were able to offer 12-weeks free at Weight Watchers or Slimming World. To see if he would like to join Weight Watchers, Owen attended and observed one of their meetings, finding the group honest and friendly. After making the decision to join Weight Watchers, the programme has had a huge impact on Owen's weight - he has lost around 5 stone.

He now feels great, eats more fruit and walks more miles than he has in decades. His fitness levels have completely changed and his goal this year is to get back into tennis. Following these lifestyle changes Owen is completely medication free with significant improvements to his eyesight and blood sugar levels. He now feels fit and healthy enough to enjoy his life and the things he enjoys doing. Owen was delighted to give us the good news about his weight loss and improved fitness. We continue to keep in touch with Owen, and he inspires others with his story in Our LiveWell

How does this work?

The tailored approach LiveWell Dorset uses to come up with solutions to the things that are stopping us achieving our goals, is based upon work done by University College London developing the COM-B model of behaviour change. In this model, all behaviour is influenced by understanding a person’s capability to change, their opportunity to change and their motivation to change. By understanding which of these is the biggest barrier to change, we can tailor support accordingly. This model of behaviour change is at the centre of the support we offer, online and in person.
